For quite a lot of people starting counselling may seem a scary proposition and we can understand why, talking about challenges and issues that come up in your life can feel daunting. Especially when you feel like you can't see a way through what it is you are facing.
But we are here to help and support you with this journey.
In our initial meeting we will talk about your situation, what brings you to therapy and what you would like to achieve by coming. It’s totally up to you how much you share and how quickly you want to share it. We will tell you about how the process works and how we can help and you can ask any questions you may have.
After this initial assessment we can discuss who might be the best therapist for you
We specialise in existential, relational talking therapies and Deep Brain Reorienting trauma therapy.
We do that by offering a space which is safe and non-judgemental. Where we can explore together what is happening with you and what in your life has left you feeling anxious, depressed, sad, angry, low in self-esteem, empty or distressed. Through working together we will try to understand how these feelings are manifesting in your life be it through addiction, social anxiety, or destructive relationships. And endeavour to bring you to a place where you feel comfort and understanding in and of yourself.
Existential Therapy - To understand your mental health in connection to the world
Existential therapists see their practice as a mutual, collaborative, encouraging and explorative dialogue between two struggling human beings -- one of whom is seeking assistance from the other who is professionally trained to provide it. Existential therapy places special emphasis on cultivating a caring, honest, supportive, empathic yet challenging relationship between therapist and client, recognizing the vital role of this relationship in the therapeutic process.
In practice, existential therapy explores how clients’ here-and-now feelings, thoughts and dynamic interactions within this relationship and with others might illuminate their wider world of past experiences, current events, and future expectations. This respectful, compassionate, supportive yet nonetheless very real encounter -- coupled with a phenomenological stance -- permits existential therapists to more accurately comprehend and descriptively address the person's way of being in the world. Taking great pains to avoid imposing their own worldview and value system upon clients or patients, existential therapists may seek to disclose and point out certain inconsistencies, contradictions or incongruence in someone's chosen but habitual ways of being. By so doing, some existential therapists will when necessary, constructively confront a person's sometimes self-defeating or destructive ways of being in the world. The therapeutic aim is to illuminate, clarify, and place these problems into a broader perspective so as to promote clients' capacity to recognise, accept, and actively exercise their responsibility and freedom: to choose how to be or act differently, if such change is so desired; or, if not, to tolerate, affirm and embrace their chosen ways of being in the world.
Deep Brain Reorienting - For processing deep routed trauma
Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a neuroscientifically-guided psychotherapeutic intervention that targets the brainstem-level neurophysiological sequence that transpired during a traumatic event.
Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) aims to access the core of the traumatic experience in a way which tracks the original physiological sequence in the brainstem, the part of the brain which is rapidly online in situations of danger or attachment disruption. There may be threat and attachment wounding together when, for example, an experience of abandonment in infancy activates age-appropriate fears for survival.
EMDR Eye movement desensitization reprocessing - Trauma Therapy
EMDR (Eye movement desensitization reprocessing), a cutting-edge and clinically proven psychotherapeutic technique for treatment of PTSD and most psychological issues.
EMDR is a fast-acting approach that is focussed and so works on a specific issue in a way that is rewarding to both the client and therapist. It shows quicker results than individual talking therapy by focussing in on the core root of the problem and delivering results as quickly as possible. Its target the root causes of your issues and help your brain re-wire more adaptive neural networks. This will automatically and organically lead to a more peaceful and satisfying experience of living in the world.
EMDR is one of only two modalities approved by the NHS, APA (American Psychological Association), US Defence Department and WHO (World Health Organisation) for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. EMDR can also be used to treat most other non-traumatic issues presented in therapy with the same efficiency.
Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalytic based treatments are evidence-based forms of therapy which can effectively treat emotional problems and a wide range of mental health conditions such as depression, eating disorders and anxiety.
Psychoanalysis started with the discoveries of Sigmund Freud a century ago, but its methods have changed and developed a great deal since then. It has the most developed theoretical base of all the talking treatments and has had a significant influence on all talking treatments.
